Comelec 1st Divison Disqualifies Grace Poe From 2016 Presidential Race

The Commision On Elections (Comelec) First Division on Tuesday, December 1, has disqualified one of leading presidential aspirant, Senator Grace Poe to join the 2016 presidential race confirmed by one of the petitioners' lawyers said Friday, December 11.

The Comelec’s Second Division has earlier disqualified Poe from running for the highest position in the country in the 2016 elections for failing to meet the residency requirement of the Constitution for presidential candidates.

In a 2-1 vote on Friday, Comelec voted to cancel Poe’s certificate of candidacy.

The Comelec First Division's ruling concerns three (3) consolidated petitions against Poe, filed by the following:
  • Former senator Francisco Tatad, who assailed Poe's citizenship
  • De La Salle University professor Antonio Contreras, who cited Poe's "failure to meet the 10-year residency requirement" to run for president
  • Former University of the East law dean Amado Valdez, who questioned Poe's natural-born Filipino status
Garcia said they would file a motion for reconsideration on Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
